Camp Courageous says farewell to a long running fundraiser
2010 CC Sprint Triathlon Committee
In 2009, volunteers Lance Greco and Nick Gearhart, sat down in Charlie Becker’s office to discuss the dream of creating a new triathlon to elevate exposure to camp’s mission and raise funds for Camp at the same time. The triathlon quickly became an annual tradition that brought the community together and left a lasting impact on everyone involved. As Lance and Nick evolved onto the events race directors and were joined by many great committee members as well as the dedication of countless race day volunteers, this event grew into a cherished occasion that people looked forward to year after year.
A special thank you to the Title Sponsor Transamerica, whose partnership, led by Chris Vorhies, played a crucial role in beginning and ensuring the sustainability and success of the triathlon. We are also grateful for Van Meter, Inc and all the other great sponsors over the years who made the Camp Courageous Triathlon one of the camp’s most successful fundraisers. We could not have held this event without the wonderful safety services of Jones County EMA, Jones County Sherriff’s office, Monticello Police, Monticello Ambulance and the Jones and Linn County Amateur Radio clubs.
The event’s continued growth was also supported by volunteers like Tobi Luetkemeier, who helped connect Special Olympics athletes to the triathlon, making it more inclusive and inspiring.
Over the years, the triathlon became known not just for the race, but also for its inspirational speakers. In 2023, Abigail Adams, born with Down Syndrome, shared her incredible journey as a model, actress, triathlete, and motivational speaker. In 2022 and 2023 as well, four-time Olympian Hunter Kemper captivated the crowd with his powerful story of perseverance. These stories reinforced the core values of courage, resilience, and determination that are at the heart of Camp Courageous.
As 2024 marked the final year for the Camp Courageous Triathlon, Lance and the organizing team made the difficult decision to go out on a high note. The decision to end the event after 15 remarkable years was not made lightly, but the impact of the triathlon on both Camp Courageous and the larger community will never be forgotten.
Since the announcement, people have shared their own special memories, and the outpouring of gratitude has been overwhelming. Here are just a few of the heartfelt comments from the Camp Courageous family:
–Jen Gilmore: “I found this triathlon as an attempt to qualify for nationals and shake off cobwebs. Immediately after the race, I toured CC. A week following, I assisted a camper there. Two years later, I met my (now) husband. It all started with this triathlon. From my heart, thank you all for the wonderful race, memories, and the life made from this race.
–Amy Matejcik Snyder: “The first time I ran that race, I met my hero from Survivor Philippines—Denise Stapley. It was amazing! Thanks for all the hard work of putting it on every year.”
–Tami Fiala: “Thank you for 15 incredible years! To all those involved in the Camp Courageous Triathlon, your dedication and passion will be deeply missed.”
–Erin Soukup: “Awe shoot!! Well, I’m very thankful we were able to participate in the final event! Thank you for all the work y’all put into it! My kids had an absolutely amazing experience for their first triathlon! “
The Camp Courageous Triathlon may have officially ended, but its spirit and the connections it fostered will continue to inspire us. Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, sponsored, and supported the event. Your dedication and support helped make this triathlon a true testament to the power of community, resilience, and giving back.
It’s been a great run! We have enjoyed the ride and hope you did as well. The impact of this event lives on, and the legacy of the triathlon will always be a part of Camp Courageous.
