Camper Pam Braye, Passes At 62…“Camp Courageous Was Her Joy!”
Camp Courageous is saddened with the passing of long-time camper, Pamela Braye, 62, of Cedar Rapids. Pam was the twin that was smaller in size and struggled to come into the world, thus her development of special needs. “Here is what made her special at the core, she was easy to please. She only wanted a few things in life: 2 tacos, a Pepsi, a few games of UNO and the Hawkeyes!” Pam first started coming to Camp in 1981 and enjoyed nearly 30 weeklong sessions at Camp over the years and took a number of great travel trips with Camp. Pam was a real joy to be around. Over the years she received about every award a camper could receive…The Happy Camper, All-Star, Good Humor, Great Helper, Horse Back Riding, Burma Bridge, Bowling, Zipline, Hawkeye, Arts & Crafts, Pool, Train, and many more. Not only did Pam like week-long sessions, but she also took and enjoyed many trips with Camp’s Travel Program from St. Louis to Hawkeye Football Games to the Twin Cities to Omaha, she loved to travel. Along with Camp, I fondly remember giving Pam many awards over her 40- years with Options of Linn County. “Pam could spot a VW Beetle 2 blocks away and slug bug you in the arm. Pam remembered the words to John Denver and Elvis’s songs. When at dances she would want to sing and dance until she dropped.” Camp’s sympathy goes out to Pam’s family and friends, including her twin sister Patricia (Steve) Cavanaugh, brothers Phil (Louanne) Neville & Gene (Pat) Neville. “Camp Courageous was her joy!” “Each of us has a fond memory of Pam and I know she would make us laugh at some things she would say. As you think of her do not think of the limitations or struggles of her life, but the limitless amount of love she gave us and joys she brought.” The family wishes for memorials to go to Camp Courageous (www.campcourageous.org/donate)
