FUELIowa’s Annual Golf Outing Benefit for Camp Courageous Is A HUGE Success!

FUELIowa’s Annual Golf Outing Benefit for Camp Courageous was held at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, IA.  It was an exceptional sold-out event! There were many new players entering this year’s event, including 20-University of Iowa Football Players!  It was a good opportunity to rekindle old relationships, along with making many new friends.  Participants enjoyed a great day for golf.  The golfing was followed by a wonderful dinner, program, and an auction to raise funds for Camp Courageous.   Camp would like to thank all the participants, sponsors, staff,  and FUELIowa for making this annual benefit possible.

The FUELIowa’s annual Golf Outing Benefit for Camp Courageous would not be the huge success it is, without the dedicated FUELIowa staff.  (L-R)  Jim Ewing, Director, Membership & Business Services; John Maynes, President, Government Affairs; Gary Koerner, CEO; and Sarah Bowman, Director, Communications & Events.

For a second year in a row, the Champion Golf Team included Camp Courageous Board Member, Bruce Scheff (R).  Gary Koerner presents the award to Greg Strelow, Brad Laughren, Brad Meyers, and Bruce Scheff.  The group gave back their winnings to be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to Camp.  Super group!

Always a treat to have John & Mary Gilroy of Coralville at this event.  They generously donated a beautiful extended van that is used to transport campers to and from camp and events.  It is a huge and needed addition to Camp’s programs.  The van is called ‘GO VAN’ after the Gilroy/O’Neill Family.  John and Mary have been involved in camp for decades through Harney Oil and through Mary’s work at the University of Iowa Foundation with camp’s dear friend, Dave Dierks.  In addition, the Gilroys provided Lazer Tag for the Camp a couple years ago…a HUGE hit with campers!  Mary and friends helped wrap 100s of gifts for campers for this year’s holiday parties.  When Santa arrived via helicopter, Mary was there at Durgin Pavilion…personally feeling the energy of hundreds of campers, so excited…and with tears in her eyes she said, “I will remember this day for the rest of my life…”  The Gilroys are the best of the best….

Glenn Hasken, Camp Courageous Board Member, and past FUELIowa Chair worked the putting green contest for Camp Courageous, but needed to leave around 3:30 PM to catch a plane.  However, not to miss an opportunity to promote Camp, he cut a video, encouraging fellow members to buy the limited-edition Camp Courageous/Fuel Iowa 1954 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery Vehicle (donated by Dave Bell, SpecCast, Dyersville, IA).  It was a great success!

Here is a group that is very near and dear to my heart (L-R) Jim Mulgrew, whose Dad, Pat Mulgrew, was among the earliest supporters of Camp Courageous through FUELIowa out of Dubuque; Randy Woodard, Chair of Elliott Oil out of Ottumwa, whose father-in-law, Jim Elliott was an early supporter;  Bruce Brooke’s Dad, Tom Brooke from West Liberty was among the first to take Camp Courageous under the FUELIowa wing in 1981; Charlie; and Larry Bentler of Fairfield, IA   Dad, LeRoy Bentler, from Houghton, IA was among the first Petroleum Marketers to visit Camp Courageous and decided to take Camp under their wing in 1981 and Larry continues to be actively involved in the industry and camp!  It is extremely heartwarming to me, to see the next generation following in the footsteps of such good and caring families.  Without their Dad’s faith in Camp Courageous and me, 45-years ago, we would not be where we are today…-Charlie
