Camp Courageous was blessed to have Bill Quinby as a long-time Board Member.  Bill was exceptional at bringing people together for the good of a cause…and he had dozens of causes and thousands of friends.

Bill joined the Camp Board in 1989, when he was Athletic Director at Coe College.  He was asked by Theron Thomsen.  In Bill’s petition to join the Board he writes, “The admiration of the success of Camp Courageous and relationship with Tait Cummins leads to the desire to become involved.  Time and work with Special Olympics for 20-years fits in with the Camp  Since this year will conclude my officiating career with the National Football League, and the final year as a member of the Civil Service Commission, gives time for a new challenge.”

(Bill was called back, after retiring from the NFL, due to the number of officials who were out for health reasons)

For many years Board Member Theron Thomsen (who used a wheelchair) would drive his van full of Cedar Rapids Board Members to the Board Meetings.  The “Cedar Rapids” gang would be laughing all the way to Camp and all the way home…with some good Camp Courageous discussion in-between.  The main four were Bill Quinby, Theron Thomsen, Dotty Cummins, and Kay Pitlik.  Joining the group at times were Jim LeMaster, Jim Klinger, and Art Christofferson.

Bill was a very active board member and served as Secretary for several years.

Even though Bill was extremely humble, and was known for always putting others first, his legacy and the number of lives he has touched will go on for generations to come.  Camp’s sympathy goes out to Bill and Janis’ Family and friends.

Many fond memories of days gone by with this group!  An absolutely wonderful and totally dedicated group to work with, who brought Camp to all new levels, at the time.  Randy Faulkner & Jim Foels remain active on the Camp Board and Jim Klinger & Randy Faulkner on the Camp Foundation Board.  –Charlie
