Long Time Camp Supporter, Congressman Jim Leach, Passes
Camp Courageous does not take government funding, and has traditionally, and continues to stay away from politics. In the early 2000s Christine Brosh, a member of the Pineapple Committee, brought to the group the idea of auctioning off ‘experiences.’ Dinner with the mayor, the police chief, the wrestling coach, and so much more. In 2003 a member of the Pineapple Committee asked Congressman Jim Leach and his wife Deba if they would be interested in providing a dinner for 8 at their home. And they immediately welcomed the experience with open arms. A number of folks chipped in to be the high bidder, so on a cold winter’s night in 2004 a van headed to rural Iowa City to Jim & Deba’s home. What occurred was an absolutely wonderful evening of great conversation and great food. The Leach’s were super gracious hosts…as was Jim throughout his life. (L-R) Deba Leach, Dana & Brad Freese, Jim Leach, Roman & Rosemary Welter, Pat & Charlie Becker and Carl & Dan Vorhies. Jim was a good and caring individual, who never let political party or beliefs separate people. They were always dear friends and supporters of the Camp. Camp’s sympathy goes out to Deba, along with family and friends upon Jim’s passing.
