Mary Ann Rice, 84, Of Ankeny Passes…Mary Ann & Dick Rice Leave A Legacy That Goes Back Decades
One of the beauties of being a part of Camp Courageous for nearly 50-years, is I can remember, like it was yesterday, dear friends that were there to support Camp when it was struggling to survive. One of those individuals was Richard ‘Dick’ Rice. Dick came to Camp in 1981, with the Board of Directors of the Iowa Oil Jobbers (today, FUELIowa). That group was led by Norb Bahl (Jesup) and Ron McGauvran (Clinton). Ron is the last living member of the group. Dick was a DX jobber (Diamond Oil) and one of eight DX jobbers that donated $1,000 a year, for many years, that was matched by the DX Brand. Dick, and his wife, Mary Ann, were the cutest couple, doing so much together for their 51-years of marriage. Dick died at the young age of 72, from pulmonary fibrosis. Dick had many health challenges toward the end of his life, in which Mary Ann stood strong with him, through it all. It was very sad, to see this vibrant person and couple, faced with such a challenging disease. Mary Ann carried on the couple’s support of Camp, after Dick’s passing in 2011, and she would always write the sweetest notes. Mary Ann, 84, of Ankeny recently passed…and thus a wonderful legacy of a super couple, Mary Ann and Dick Rice, is left behind to be remembered and admired…-Charlie Becker
