Miracle League of Linn County 2025 Awards Celebration
Camp Courageous was honored to have had Byron Tabor give the Camp the opportunity to speak and hand out medals to all the participants at the Miracle League of Linn County 2025 Awards Celebration.
(Miracle League is a baseball program providing children and adults with physical or mental disabilities the opportunity to play baseball on a custom-designed field, with support from volunteer “buddies.”)
Miracle League’s first field in Iowa was in Des Moines with a groundbreaking in 2008. Their Downtown Kiwanis Club was dying and when this project came along, and they took it under their wings, the Club grew by leaps and bounds. The Des Moines Metro Kiwanis gave me a tour a little after their groundbreaking, and I was persuaded to become a member of the Miracle Field Organization representing Eastern Iowa for $500/year membership fee. Jack Roeder, who I have a great deal of admiration and respect for, had me involved in Prospect Meadows…and by January 2015 I was writing letters to the editor of the Cedar Rapids Gazette encouraging people to get involved in Prospect Meadows and Miracle League. Miracle League is at the heart of that complex. I was never so happy to hand off the Miracle League Membership Binder to Byron Tabor & the area Kiwanis…and they have obviously done an exceptional job! They took it from nothing to over 160 participants and hundreds of volunteers and supporters. So many Camp Courageous campers look forward to being a part of Miracle League and playing on the field.
Here is the ending of a Letter to the Editor of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, from January, 2015…ten years ago…4-years before groundbreaking.
‘I think the Miracle Field as part of the Prospect Meadows complex sends the right message to all visitors that we are a community of inclusiveness, where we can have one site with many fields that are totally inclusive for all. For those with special needs….they are right there playing with other players of a variety of ages, capabilities, and other distinct groups. All the ball teams will learn much from each other.
Prospect Meadows will become the source of pride for all. From those who are extremely gifted and talented, to those who are not. There is something in this project for everyone..and we are grateful a Miracle League Field was included. I wish Jack Roeder and his Prospect Meadows Team the very best, as the reality gets closer, with everyone’s support!
