Respite Director Job Description
RESPONSIBLE TO: Program Director
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or relevant field or comparable experience.
- Has demonstrated ability in leadership and organization.
- Has demonstrated ability in human relation skills.
- Has knowledge of camper care for people with disabilities, including campers with severe and profound disabilities, intellectual and/or physical disabilities, autism, and individuals with brain injuries.
- Current certifications First Aid, CPR, and Medication Manager for Iowa or in-house Medication Manager course, and Adult and Child Mandatory Reporter certifications.
- Current Lifeguard certification (willingness to obtain in 6 months)
- Current Commercial Driver’s License (willingness to obtain in 6 months) or Chauffer’s license.
- Ability to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time; ability to tolerate a variety of weather conditions; ability to lift and carry at least 50lbs.
- Experience in volunteer recruitment and public speaking.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the general direction of the Program Director, the Respite Director is responsible for setting up and facilitating respite weekends and emergency respite care. As well as developing, recruiting and organizing all aspects of the respite program. The Respite Director is responsible for the safety and welfare of all campers involved in adventure activities. The Director will do related work as required to maintain the philosophy and goals of the camp.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Respite Director
- Develop and implement quality activities geared to the specific age group and ability level of the campers.
- Responsible for the health, safety, conduct and morale of all respite care campers.
- Cooperate effectively with the total staff to enhance the overall camp experience, especially the respite care program.
- Recruit, supervise and train volunteers & respite staff to provide a quality respite care program. Ensure all hiring procedures and documentation is completed.
- Maintain close communication with area communities and other means of obtaining volunteers for the respite care program.
- Maintain close communication and a relationship with all camp departments.
- Build community relationships and obtain donations benefiting the Respite Program and camp.
- Perform other duties as assigned for the purpose of Camp Courageous and the service it provides.
- Financial responsibility for private pay, waiver billing and relationships with case managers.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Organize each respite care weekend to meet individual camper needs. Plan activities and supervise volunteers and respite staff. There will be 24 weekends scheduled each year.
- Be available for all emergency respite care needs; weekends and holidays included.
- Organize comprehensive list of respite care services in area for referral use.
- Develop regular training sessions for respite care volunteers and respite staff.
- Create and implement a respite care training manual for volunteer and respite staff orientation.
- Communicate with parents, guardians, and interested persons about the respite care opportunities. Send mailings on a regular basis.
- Schedule all respite care needs including night and rest duty as well as provide on-site supervision for volunteers and respite staff during weekends.
- Coordinate meals, sleeping arrangements, and activities for all respite care campers.
OPTIONAL: THERAPEUTIC RECREATION INTERN SUPERVISOR:
- Obtain and/or maintain Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential.
- Meet National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) requirements for upkeep and renewal of CTRS credential, including CEUs, annual maintenance fees and five- year cycle recertification.
- Develop, maintain and update Internship Manual.
- Recruit, hire and supervise qualified therapeutic recreation interns.
- Assist intern in orientation to the camp, its policies, procedures and activities.
- Meet daily with intern to discuss progress, assignments, concerns, etc.
- Assist intern with school assignment requirements such as bi-weekly reports, evaluations and other assignments.
- Assist intern with writing program and camper goals and objectives, evaluations, progress notes and other documentation as required by NCTRC.
