Ron Steele, Iowa’s Longest Sitting News Anchor Retires After Over 50-Years…A Dear Friend Of Camp Courageous
A huge congratulations to Ron Steele, on his retirement, after over 50-years with KWWL-TV. Ron has been exceptional in covering Northeast Iowa, the State, the Country, and the World! Since 1974, Ron has been at KWWL, where he started as the sports director, and has been Iowa’s longest sitting anchor. KWWL-TV is the NBC affiliate for the Cedar Rapids–Waterloo–Iowa City–Dubuque television market. Ron has been the news anchor at KWWL in Waterloo, IA since 1979. Ron and Camp Courageous go back to some of Camp’s earliest years. Ron has visited Camp Courageous many times throughout his career. Just a couple years ago, he spent a full day at Camp. Campers, staff, and visitors were thrilled to have Ron interviewing, taking pictures, and shooting video. Ron radiates warmth, compassion, and a genuine sense of caring. A very busy person, Camp was always grateful to Ron for sharing his time at Camp, over the years. Ron was the total package. Uniquely, he would bring the video camera, do his own interviewing, do his own editing, and would follow a project from start to end. Ron and I became close friends after he came to Monticello to cover my carrying of the Olympic Torch, as did he, in 1996. We also shared our love for WLS-radio out of Chicago, growing up, teaching, U of I graduates, and so much more. Ron is a member of the Iowa Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. Like Walter Cronkite, Ron’s retirement is a huge loss for continuity and trust that can only be earned over time, but we wish him all the best in his retirement…and please Ron, enjoy all the well wishes you so deserve…-Charlie
