Trailblazer, Kathleen Hernandez, 93, Passes

Camp is saddened by the passing of Kathleen Hernandez, 93, of Cedar Rapids/Iowa City.  Kathy was one of those early trailblazers for those with special needs in the Cedar Rapids area.  She was a dear friend of Dotty Cummins, and to many other parents of campers. Kathy’s son, Matthew started coming to Camp Courageous in 1981, and has never stopped.  Kathly was a strong advocate and supporter of Camp Courageous. Both she and her husband, Joe, spent many weekends selling United Airlines, Jet Fresh Hawaiian Pineapples, off the back of CRST semis and eventually from a variety Hy-Vees as Hy-Vee took over this annual fundraiser for Camp. Joe passed in 2008.  It was rare that Kathy and Matt did not attend a pancake or omelet breakfast in support of Camp Courageous. Even when she was no longer driving, she was strong in her resolve to enlist recruits to take them to Camp.  Camp’s sympathy goes out to Kathy’s children, Matthew, and Mary, along with family and friends.  If given the opportunity, indulge in a donut in Kathy’s honor (preferably from Camp and her dear friends at Donutland).  It was Kathleen’s desire to have her memorials come to Camp: www.campcourageous.org/donate
