Twila Griffith’s Donation To The Camp Courageous Foundation, Leaves a Beautiful Legacy To Her Husband, Daryl Griffith.

It was a wonderful treat to have Twila Griffith and Doug Daubenberger visit Camp Courageous! Both are widowed from wonderful spouses. Doug’s roots are in Quasqueton and grew up with the late, former board member, Phil Short and family. Twila is from Dubuque. Twila’s husband, Daryl Griffith was my exceptional Earth Science teacher. Mr., Griffith was ahead of his time, with Earth Day just starting when I was in his class in 1970. I told Twila, I wasn’t an ‘A’ student, but from the inspiration of Mr. Griffith came solar panels at Camp Courageous, saving the Camp over $120,000/year and in my personal life where solar panels power everything and the planting of thousands of trees, most from seedlings…most at a rate 250-trees/year at Camp and 250/year at home. The Griffiths have been long time supporters of Camp Courageous and Doug had heard so much about the Camp from Tait Cummins and Leo Greco on WMT.
Here is an email from Mr. Griffith, seven years ago….

Thanks for your wonderful birthday message. It brought tears to my eyes. My accomplishments pale next to your wonderful work at Camp Courageous. Camp Courageous would not be what it is today without your outstanding dedication and hard work over these many years. It really means a great deal to me to hear from such a wonderful past student. Thanks for the wonderful comments, especially on my 85th birthday. Even at 85 my wife Twila and I are very active. We travel a great deal throughout each year. We have traveled throughout the USA and have wonderful friends in England, Ireland, and Wales that we have visited for several years. We have volunteered at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium for 12 plus years and Twila volunteers at the Dubuque Arboretum. After teaching for 34 years. I was a summer park ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in parks in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois for nine summers. I’m an Army Vet, serving in Korea back in the 1950s. Enough about me, you are the one who has done so many wonderful accomplishments for the past several years.
Thanks again for your wonderful birthday message.
Love to you, Daryl & Twila
