Camp Courageous is saddened by the passing of Sally Novetzke, 93, of Cedar Rapids, IA. Sally and her husband, Richard, along with their family and their U.S. Nameplate Company family, located in Mt. Vernon, have been supporters of Camp Courageous for decades. Dick and Sally had been married for 60-years, an incredibly adventurous 60-years, that would leave anyone spell bound, just listening to their stories. Sally and my acquaintance began in the late 70s, when a neighbor, Tom Tauke, was running for an office. Years later, our paths would cross again when we had the good fortune to serve on the Hoover Presidential Foundation Board of Trustees for decades. The bond only strengthened for Camp when Camp’s former Dietary Director, Julie O’Connor, and her husband Mike, a long-time employee of U.S. Nameplate Company, began involving Sally in more Camp Courageous activities. As Sally transitioned from homes, over the years, she was very good about calling and offering Camp Courageous many of her home furnishings. Sally was always about service to others, whether it was on the local stage, with Camp Courageous, or on the world stage. Ambassador Sally worked with presidents, prime ministers, popes, queens, kings, and a host of diplomats from around the world. During Sally’s time as the United States Ambassador to the island nation of Malta, she led the team that coordinated the Malta Summit between President Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Sally had an incredible work ethic and a drive to be successful with everything she involved herself. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew her. Camp’s sincerest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Sally. Her mold has been broken, but her incredible lifetime of experiences and accomplishments will remain legendary, on the world stage, as well as the stage she called home. What I deeply respected about Sally, was out of all the incredible people she had met, the great leaders of the world, she always stayed well-grounded and put her love of her family and home first. -Charlie
