Dr. Gayle Pohl, PH.D. Associate Professor of Public Relations at the University of Northern Iowa Opens Big Door For Camp Courageous, Again!

A special thank you Dr. Gayle Pohl, PH.D., (front row, second from the right) Associate Professor of Public Relations at the University of Northern Iowa, for giving Camp Courageous the opportunity to present to her Non-Profit Fund-Raising Class. They are having a little competition to raise funds and thus awareness for Camp Courageous. Gayle gave Camp Courageous the opportunity last year to present to her Public Relations Methods Class, who did an exceptional job Marketing the Camp to obtain more staff. Camp was very fortunate to have Dr. Jeffrey Brand stop into the class last year and tell his story about his children, Steven, and Brittany, attending Camp and what an incredible experience they have at Camp. This year’s class has several students involved with Camp. One of the students is a regular with Camp’s Respite Program and it was heartwarming to have another student from Pella visit about being a friend with Camper Stella Turnbull. He was just thinking about her, when the presentation went to a picture of Stella on the zip line and in the pool. Stella was an MDA camper with SMA who passed this past summer. Both Camp and the community of Pella grieved Stella’s passing. She had beaten the odds…she was only supposed to make it to two years old… and she had just graduated from high school a few weeks before her passing. Stella’s vent was carried along with her into the pool for the full experience. The zipline is rigged with a box for a ventilator and additional head supports to make it possible for her to soar through camp safely. To take a lesson from Stella… be courageous and live life to the fullest every day. We will be excited to see the results of this super class!
