Camp Courageous Welcomes New CEO Craig Stadtmueller

Monticello, Iowa – October 31, 2025 Camp Courageous is pleased to announce the hiring of Craig Stadtmueller as the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer, beginning January 5, 2026. Craig succeeds Charlie Becker, who has served as CEO of Camp Courageous for more than 45 years. Charlie will remain on staff  to ensure a smooth and meaningful leadership transition, continuing to support the campers, staff, and community he has loved for decades.

A Legacy of Leadership and Heart

In 2024, Charlie Becker announced that he would shift his focus to the Camp Courageous Foundation, while the Board of Directors began a nationwide search for the next CEO. The Board engaged One Above HR, led by Sarah Hermanson, to guide the succession process — emphasizing that “this transition was about honoring the past while preparing for the future.”

“Charlie’s leadership has inspired tremendous growth and change,” said the late Dr. Earl DeShaw, a former Camp Courageous Board Member and founder of the Camp Courageous Foundation.  Dr. Earl DeShaw recognized early on that Charlie’s talent, dedication, and passion could expand Camp’s reach.

According to Mary Van Houten, Camp Courageous Board Chair, “Under the guidance of Charlie, the camp grew from five buildings to 35, from 40 acres to 400, and from serving a few hundred campers to nearly 10,000 each year. We are grateful for his dedication and the compassion he’s shown to generations of campers and their families.”

Introducing Craig Stadtmueller

Craig Stadtmueller joins Camp Courageous from Kirkwood Community College, where he served as Director of the Jones County Regional Center, overseeing programs that connect students, educators, and communities through innovative learning experiences. He is also a long-time Monticello Community School District Board President, known for his thoughtful leadership, collaborative decision-making, and unwavering commitment to community service.

A transformational and servant leader, Craig is recognized for cultivating trust, championing service, and building collaborative environments that empower people to grow and succeed. His work has consistently reflected the values that align closely with Camp Courageous’ mission — trust, integrity, and inclusion.

“Craig brings a unique blend of experience, compassion, and community connection,” said Mary VanHouten, Camp Courageous Board Chair. “His leadership philosophy, heart for service, and personal ties to Camp Courageous make him an extraordinary fit for this role.”

A Personal Connection to Camp Courageous

Craig’s connection to Camp Courageous runs deep — his sister, Kim Stadtmueller, has attended camp for many years and treasures her experiences there. This personal bond gives Craig an intimate understanding of the camp’s profound impact on campers and families, and is the reason Charlie encouraged him to apply.

“Camp Courageous has touched my family in a very real way,” Craig shared. “I’ve witnessed firsthand the joy, confidence, and sense of belonging it brings to campers like my sister. It’s an honor to join a place that has given so much to so many.”

Craig and his wife, Lisa, reside in Monticello with their two children, Jessica and Brandt.

Looking Ahead

As Camp Courageous enters this new chapter, Charlie Becker will continue to play an active role in mentoring Craig and advancing the Foundation’s long-term sustainability.  Mary Van Houten said, “This transition is about ensuring Camp Courageous continues to thrive for generations to come. Craig’s passion, integrity, and leadership will help carry this mission forward.”

Camp Courageous remains committed to providing exceptional year-round recreational, respite, and travel opportunities for individuals of all ages with disabilities. The Board, staff, campers, and community look forward to welcoming Craig Stadtmueller and celebrating the next era of growth and service.
