Camp Courageous Deeply Saddened By The Passing Of Long Time Camp Courageous Board Member, Joe Ironside, 93, of Monticello, IA.

Camp Courageous is deeply saddened by the passing of long time Camp Courageous Board Member, Joe Ironside, 93, of Monticello, IA. Joe’s involvement with the Camp goes back 40+years. He joined the Camp Board in 1998 and was a 1997 ‘Nine Who Care Award Recipient’ for his service to our country and outstanding volunteerism. Joe had a fascinating life, and he was an exceptional storyteller. Joe earned a Certificate to cut hair from the Cedar Rapids Barber College and then enlisted in the United States Navy where he cut officers’ hair and ran the commissary. He married Donna Kremer, his high school sweetheart in June 1954. They were married for 67-years…celebrating their 50th Anniversary in the Sill Barn at Camp Courageous. Joe worked for the Postal Service for 36-years, culminating as the Postmaster in Monticello. Camp Courageous’ has six mailings a year represented about 25,000 pieces each. Camp Courageous had software that would put mailing labels in zip code order, then Joe, with his years of postal service, would gather over 50 volunteers to sort the mailing…saving the camp, thousands. The volunteers were never so disappointed than when Joe Corpstein at Mailing Services in Cedar Rapids offered to do the mailings for free! In addition, Joe would work all the Camp events, make fruitcakes and so much more. Joe loved to dance, loved music, and loved to golf. Joe & Donna travelled all 50 states and 17 different countries with the Friendship Force. Joe was a friendly soul and will be greatly missed. Joe is survived by 6 children; siblings, Stephen P. Ironside, Mary Jo Ironside-Ross (Joe), Christopher E. Ironside (Ann), Matthew J. Ironside (Megumi), Theresa M. Ironside and Jonathon P. Ironside (Anna); and 11 grandchildren: Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, parents and two children; Kathyrn D. Ironside and J. Michael Ironside (Julie Steffen). In lieu of flowers, Joe wished for his memorial donations be made to Camp Courageous, Monticello, Iowa. (www.campcourageous.org/donate)
