Camp Courageous extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Pete Sauser, 82, of Monticello, Iowa, upon his passing. We especially extend our heartfelt condolences to his daughter, Laura Sauser, and his brother, Nick (Julie) Sauser.
Pete and his wife, Mary Jane, were among Camp Courageous’ earliest and most loyal supporters, playing an important role in the Camp’s formative years. Their generosity, dedication, and friendship helped shape the Camp we know today.
One memorable example of their commitment came in 1981, when the Monticello Lions Club recognized Camp Courageous’ need for a bus to transport campers to special events, as well as canoeing and fishing outings at Central Park. The Lions generously donated a beautiful used school bus to the Camp. Lion Norm Hinrichs, who oversaw the Monticello School System’s buses, and Lion Pete Sauser, owner of Sauser Body Shop, helped lead the effort. Lions members spent countless hours painting and perfecting the bus and installing 54 sets of seat belts to make it ready for Camp’s campers.
Pete and Mary Jane continued to support Camp Courageous throughout the years. Mary Jane’s greenhouse business was another source of support, and the couple faithfully attended nearly all Camp events, particularly the breakfasts and open houses. Pete’s mother, Adeline, was also a special delight during her visits to Camp.
Pete and his brother, Nick, were instrumental in Camp Courageous’ early years. They were always there when the Camp and its staff needed them, offering their time, talents, and unwavering support.
Pete leaves behind a lasting legacy of kindness, generosity, and service to others. Camp Courageous will always be grateful for the important role he and his family played in helping the Camp grow and serve generations of campers.
Rest in peace, Pete. Thank you for being such an important part of the Camp Courageous family. You will be remembered with gratitude and missed by many.
