Responsible to:  Aquatics Director

 

Qualifications:

  1. Must be 18 years of age.
  2. Sincere and genuine interest in working with individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities.
  3. Interest, knowledge and skills in the field of swimming.
  4. Leadership and teaching ability.
  5. Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities and programming in swimming preferred.
  6. Must have Medication Manager certification for Iowa or in-house Medication Manager Course within 30 days.
  7. Adult & Child Mandatory Reporter within 30 days.
  8. Current Lifeguard certification which includes First Aid and CPR/PR. Must have Waterfront Lifeguard certification within 6 months.
  9. Ability to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time; ability to tolerate a variety of weather conditions; ability to lift and carry at least 50lbs.
  10. Current physical exam, renewal every year.
  11. CDL Driver’s License is encouraged.

 

Position Overview:

With the Aquatic Director, the Aquatic Specialist is responsible for assisting in providing a quality aquatics program.  The Aquatic Specialist is responsible for the safety and welfare of all campers participating in swimming activities. This is a year-round position.

 

General Responsibilities:

  1. Implementing quality swimming activities geared to the specific age group and ability level of the campers.
  2. Lifeguard at assigned activities, including evening programs/clean-up, if necessary.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Full participation in the orientation program in the Aquatic Department for trainings and in-services.
  2. Be aware of all safety rules and procedures. Make safety top priority in all activities.
  3. Uphold all camp policies.
  4. Lifeguard duties as assigned.
  5. Keep swimming pool area, locker rooms, and lobby area clean.
  6. Be present at program meeting to:
    1. Receive information about camper groups.
    2. Work with Aquatic staff to develop a schedule of activities in the swimming area for the upcoming camper group.
    3. Provide input for developing evening programs, all camp activities, and special events.
  7. Be present at staff meetings to:
    1. Work with other staff to ensure quality programming the in the swimming area.
  8. Communicate to Aquatics Director any concerns or ideas relating to camper problems, program activities or staff working relationships.
  9. Support the Aquatics Director in their duties, as they consider appropriate and necessary.
  10. Familiarize yourself as much as possible with campers’ individual backgrounds and needs by reading applications of campers before they arrive.
  11. Do cabin duty if assigned.
  12. Fill in for counselors if needed.

 

Additional Specific Responsibilities:

  1. If assigned, have schedule posted by 2 PM each Sunday in the summer.
  2. Organize and maintain supplies and equipment in the pool building.
  3. Report equipment needs and repairs to the Aquatic Director.
