Required:

  1. Registered Nurse, currently licensed in Iowa.
  2. Certification as an instructor in Standard First Aid and CPR, or an agreement to obtain both certifications.
  3. Self motivated professional with leadership and organizational skills.
  4.  Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
  5. Ability to process large quantities of work with minimal supervision and exceptional quality.
  6.  Outstanding public relation skills.

Desired: Bachelor of Science in nursing, experience or background in school nursing, community health, camp nursing, or involvement with individuals having disabilities.

JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Nursing Director is responsible in assisting the Nursing Director with the overall operation of nursing services at Camp Courageous of Iowa. 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Nursing Director 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct a physical assessment of all campers within 24 hours of their arrival at camp, documenting any health concerns such as bruises, cuts, pressure sores, infections, skin or scalp diseases.  Administer appropriate first aid according to the designated protocol. Make physician referrals as needed.
  2. Responsible for all medications and/or first aid treatments brought to camp. Administer medications and treatments according to prescribed physicians orders.
  3. Recruit, interview, hire, and train the nursing staff as well as supervise and evaluate their quality of work when the Nursing Director is unavailable.  This will include completing an annual performance evaluation on those employees that report directly to the Nursing Director.
  4. Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to complete various nursing projects. Work closely with volunteers and/or volunteer groups that are performing nursing related duties.
  5. Accurately document all medications, treatments, or injuries of campers and staff.
  6. Report and discuss any significant health treatment or concern with the Camp Medical Doctor-Director.
  7. Inform camper’s family/legal guardian about health concerns that arise while at camp.
  8. Assist with camper checkout process and return camper files to main office.  
  9. During staff orientation assist the Nursing Director with discussing and training staff on all health and safety procedures.   
  10. Teach first aid and CPR/AED to all incoming counselors and program specialists.
  11. Train program staff on their responsibilities regarding camper’s health by noting and reporting symptoms of illness, injuries, and unsafe practices or conditions that might contribute to accidents or illness
  12. Responsible to prepare and maintain first aid kits and instruct camp staff in the use of the contents. Responsible for sign-out procedure of accountability.
  13. Provide input regarding nutritional values of special diets and general menus served by the dietary staff.
  14. Assist in developing and maintaining a nursing policy and procedure manual specific to camp’s environment.
  15. Promote good public relations with the Camp Medical Doctor-Director and other outside medical agencies and organizations.
  16. Assist the Travel Director with the Travel Program by processing camper medications, paperwork for trips, contacting guardians and facilities about deposits, and attending trips that require nursing interventions.
  17. Formulate and execute a plan to offset the financial investment of the Assistant Nursing Director from December to March.
  18. Provide services that generate income for camp. These may include but not be limited to selling advertising in the Courier, teaching classes, speaking about nursing, serving as nurse at community events, etc.
  19. Develop contacts for new streams of revenue, material, and equipment for camp.
  20. Obtain donations for nursing use.
  21. Assist with camp fundraisers.  This may include but not be limited to: open houses, Cruisin’ for Camp Courageous, Duathlon, Pineapple Gala, and Fruitcake sales.
  22. Assist all camp departments as needed.  This may include but not be limited to facility rentals and weekend duties.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director in the purpose of Camp Courageous of Iowa and the service it provides.
