Mr. Journalism, John Schweitzer, Passes At 87…Dear Friend Of The Camp Courageous Family

Pictured are three of the most wonderful people one could have ever met (L-R)…John Schweitzer, Dotty Cummins, and Maisie Schweitzer.  The picture was taken at the Rainbow Super Club, as we celebrated Charlie Cummins’ birthday.  Maisie and Dotty were sisters, and John was Maisie and George Schweitzer’s son.  All extremely sharp individuals and all had a deep love for journalism.  John recently died at the age of 87 in Eden Prairie, MN.  Dotty and Maisie preceded him in death.  All incredibly fun, story tellers…second to none.  Dotty & Maisie’s dad was Warden of the Men’s Reformatory in Anamosa from 1932-1933.  It was a time when the Warden and his family lived in the upper level of the entrance to the facility…which resulted in many great stories!  Tait & Dotty Cummins had a son, Charlie, who was one of Camp Courageous’ first campers in 1974 and continues to attend Camp every year and is now 64 years old.  We loved when John called Monticello, Anamosa, and Cedar Rapids home.  John worked for the Associated Press (1974-1996), KCRG radio (1996-1998) and KMRY radio (1999-2000); along with freelancing for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.  Along with being a regular Camp Courageous volunteer, we loved when John came to play his saxophone for the campers in the New Horizons Band and the Dixie Notes Plus.  John was a real joy to be around and will be dearly missed.  For more of the Dotty and her family’s story go to the link:  https://campcourageous.org/dotty-cummins-eulogy/
