Camp Courageous is constructing a Nature Trail in the Pictured Rocks Addition (north of base camp). This trail will be part of a long-term project of expanding paved and unpaved trails into many areas. The Nature Trail in the Pictured Rocks addition will travel through the north area of Camp’s property. The area, formally the “Pictured Rocks Methodist Camp,” had basic walking trails in several areas when Camp acquired the land. However, these trails were not very accessible for campers being served by Camp Courageous.
Features
- The nature trail has a six-foot wide path.
- The main trail will have a paved surface.
- Allows campers and other individuals to access the area.
- Several “bump-out” areas will feature benches along the trail. With over a mile of gorgeous, yet challenging terrain, a bench to sit and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings is a must. Camp plans to have about 10 bump-out areas with a comfortable bench that can be sponsored for $2,500.00 each.

The cost to establish a trail, such as grading, installation of culverts, rocks for wash out, paving, etc., over a mile of Nature Trail at the Pictured Rocks Addition is about $5o0,000. The Transamerica Foundation has donated $100,000 toward establishing the trails at Camp Courageous. About $250,000 remains to be raised to cover the cost of the nature trail.
Any contribution toward the Nature Trail at the Pictured Rocks Addition is appreciated. There are several levels of sponorship available for this project, including Title Sponsorship with naming rights. Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze level contributions will be recognized on a plaque at the start of the Nature Trail along with all “Nature” contributions of $1,000 or more. Use the Nature Trail Contribution form to select a sponsorship level.
Construction
Initial construction preparation and planning of the Nature Trail at the Pictured Rocks Addition started in the fall of 2022. In the spring of 2023 the trail’s path through the Pictured Rocks Addition was established. Construction and finishing work is ongoing.
Careful consideration was made on the environmental impact of the trail on the area before construction started. Efforts were made to have minimal impact during the construction of the trail and minimize the need to take out trees and other vegetation.
