Paul Behrends, 102-Years-Old, Spent Half His Life Supporting Camp Courageous

Camp Courageous’ sincere sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Paul Behrends, 102, of Monticello, IA upon his passing.  Paul, and his wife, Donna, farmed in the Anamosa and Hopkinton area until 1969 when they moved to Monticello. Well into the years when most people think about retirement, Paul owned the Behrends Family Store, sold insurance, drove a truck, and obtained his real estate license. Along with volunteer work at Camp Courageous, he would drive Jones County residents to their medical appointments in Cedar Rapids.   He was an inspiration in how to age with purpose and vigor, always maintaining his amazing sense of humor. What a dear friend Paul was to Camp Courageous, since almost the inception.  He and Donna gave memorials, were involved in fund raisers, like the KLEH Radio Auction, back in 1984.  For decades Paul would volunteer in the camp office…inputting camper records from paper to the computer data base and so much more.  They would join other friends and label, sort, and bundle thousands of Couriers and other mailings, as Camp did 100% of mailings with volunteers and former Monticello Postmaster, Joe Ironside’s leadership.  Paul and Donna volunteered for dozens of camper events, like the Back-to-School Festivals.  Paul was simple, one of the nicest ‘gentlemen’, one could ever meet.  Always into giving back to make life better for others.  He led by example with hard work and passion.  Paul desired to have his memorials go to Camp Courageous, 12007 190th St., Monticello, IA 52310  (www.campcourageous.org/donate) and his church.
