Qualifications:  

  • Must be at least 18 years old. 
  •  A sincere and genuine interest in working with persons with disabilities.  
  •  Interest, knowledge and skills in the field of therapeutic recreation. 
  •  Leadership and teaching ability. 
  •  Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities and programming in recreation activities preferred. 
  •  Must have CPR and First Aid certification. 
  • Willingness to obtain CDL to drive campers and staff. 
  • Willingness to obtain medication manager certification.

Job Summary:
With the aid of the Program Director, Assistant Program Director and Internship Supervisor the Therapeutic Recreation Intern is responsible for organizing and administering a quality program in recreation. The Therapeutic Recreation Intern is responsible for the safety and welfare of all campers involved in recreation activities. The Therapeutic Recreation Intern is also responsible for completing all reports and assignments to fulfill university/college requirements.  

 General Responsibilities:  

  • Develop and lead quality activities geared to the specific age group, functioning level, types of disability and interest of individual camper groups.  
  • Organize and expand total program, developing activities with the goals and objectives of the program in mind.

 Specific Responsibilities:  

  • Full participation in orientation program with leadership role in recreation area.  
  • Be aware of all safety rules and procedures. Make safety your top priority in all activities.  
  • Uphold all camp policies.  
  • Be present at program meetings to:  
    • Receive information about camper groups related to programming (age range, functioning levels, physical disabilities, attention span, activity preferences, etc.)  
    • Work with program staff to develop a schedule of activities in the recreation area for the coming camper group.  
    • Provide input for developing evening programs, all camp activities or special events.  
  • Be present at scheduling meetings to:  
    • Explain new activities and make needed announcements.
    • Visit with nurses regarding specific health or behavior problems of campers in your group.
  • Be present at all staff meetings to:  
    • work with other staff to ensure quality programming in the recreation area.  
    • Participate in debriefing (provide input concerning work with previous camper group- joys, concerns and suggestions).
  • Greet campers upon arrival and introduce them to their counselors.
  • Assist camper group and counselors to whom you are assigned.
    • With camper care.
    • During meal times.
    • Anytime during working hours when you are not organizing or leading [Text Wrapping Break]camp activities.
  • Organize and lead evening programs, special events and activities in recreation area as scheduled. [Text Wrapping Break] 

Additional Specific Responsibilities:  

  • Plan at least six hours of recreation activities each day, Monday through Thursday. Activities include dance, movement, caving, creative dramatics, archery, sports, new games,etc.  
  • Have schedule planned and posted by 2pm each Sunday.  
  • Continually organize and maintain and keep recreation supplies and equipment in the recreation room.  
  • Report equipment needs, or repair or replacement needs to the Program Director/Assistant Program Director.  
  • Maintain archery range and horseshoe court.  
  • Explain recreation program objectives, activities and procedures; care and location of equipment and safety rules to staff at orientation.  
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the recreation program in terms of objectives, interest, attitudes and participation and make weekly reports to Program Director/Assistant Program Director and/or Internship Supervisor.  
  • Write full mid-season and end-of-season report on recreation program (formative and summative evaluations of program).  
  • Daily meetings with Intern Supervisor to discuss responsibilities, due dates, progress, concerns and projects.  
  • Goals and Objectives- the intern and Intern Supervisor will review areas for growth and experience to be obtained during the internship, a timeline and process for meeting those objectives.  
  • Individual Program Plan- the intern will develop an individual program plan for one participant each week for six to eight weeks. The individual program plan will contain an assessment (camper application), goals and objectives, program plan (activity schedule), progress notes, and evaluations.  
  • Special Project- the intern will take on one major project from beginning to end. The intern will oversee each step of the project from inception to completion. The project will be something useful to the camp, and it should provide the intern with a learning experience.
