Over the weekend, Camp Courageous had the pleasure of welcoming nearly 150 volunteers who spent their time completing service projects and participating in training opportunities throughout Camp.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from congregations across Eastern Iowa came together for an afternoon of service at Camp Courageous. In just three short hours, volunteers accomplished an incredible amount of work!
Projects included pulling weeds and sprucing up areas around Camp in preparation for our upcoming Waffle Breakfast, shucking nearly 60 bushels of corn for Camp’s Dietary team to process and use next year, and making colorful keychains and bracelets that will be given as prizes to campers during our Fall Festival in October.
Camp Courageous is incredibly grateful that this group chose to volunteer with us for the second year in a row, and we hope it continues to become an annual tradition! The amount of work they completed in just a few hours saves Camp staff a tremendous amount of time and allows our team to continue focusing on the campers we serve.
Many hands truly do make quick work!
Camp also had the opportunity to host Team Rubicon, with sawyers traveling from across Iowa and surrounding states for a weekend of hands-on training.
From Friday evening through Sunday, Team Rubicon members spent many hours training sawyers of various skill levels on proper safety procedures, equipment maintenance, and techniques that will help prepare them for real-life disaster response situations.
The weekend was a win for both Team Rubicon and Camp Courageous. Team members were able to practice their skills in realistic conditions, while Camp benefited from having numerous fallen trees cut into smaller, manageable pieces that can now be removed as we continue cleaning up wooded areas around Camp.
Team Rubicon also spent time identifying trees and areas around Camp that may need additional attention, helping us continue to keep our trails and wooded spaces safe for campers, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
We are already looking forward to welcoming Team Rubicon back in October, when they will put their skills to work clearing trees and preparing areas around Rainbow Trail ahead of Camp Courageous’ Annual Haunted Trail!
We cannot thank all of the volunteers who gave their time, energy, and talents this weekend enough. Nearly 150 volunteers made an incredible impact in just a few days, and their work will continue to benefit Camp Courageous and the individuals we serve long after the weekend is over.
