A Monticello Legend, LaFonda (Thielen) Simon, 85, Passes

Camp Courageous is saddened by the passing of LaFonda (Thielen) Simon, 85 of Monticello, IA.  LaFonda has always been a part of Camp Courageous, from some of its earlies years. LaFonda was very sharp and was a great source of Monticello history, and knowledge in general.  In 1961, LaFonda started what would become a 48-year legacy with Cuckler Steel Span Company, as their administrative assistant.  We would often reminisce about Camp Courageous Honorary Board Member Dave Cuckler and those early years.  Dave Cuckler donated the first building to Camp, the Green Shed, which was a maintenance building and the hub of activity, until just a few years ago.  A lot of items built during those early days, were constructed in the Green Shed.  In addition, the Green Shed housed the Camp’s well equipment and first walk-in freezer and cooler.  Dave not only donated the building, a team of Cuckler employees volunteered to erect the structure!  A couple decades ago, in the back of an airport hangar Dave said, “Charlie, looking back over the years, what we perceived as the worst of times, were actually the best of times.”  Obviously that comment has never left me…and LaFonda played a key role in those best of times.  In many ways, LaFonda was far ahead of her time, professionally.  She has been a key to a very successful company and a great community.  LaFonda will be dearly missed…  LaFonda wished for her memorials to go to Camp Courageous.  (www.campcourageous.org/donate)
